Port Colborne opens new health and wellness centre | Bullet News ...

Port Colborne celebrated the official grand opening of the new $32-million Vale Health and Wellness Centre Saturday morning.

This new multi-purpose facility, operated jointly by the City of Port Colborne and the YMCA of Niagara, features two NHL-sized ice pads, a walking/jogging track for all-season use, six outdoor bocce courts, an aquatic centre with lap and leisure pools, a gymnasium and a fitness area.



This facility is integrated with the T.A. Lannan Sports Complex, which includes three baseball diamonds, six soccer fields, a playground and recreation trails that connect with the Welland Canal Multi-Use Trails.

Boasting numerous accessibility features, the Vale Health and Wellness Centre will accommodate community activities for residents of all ages and abilities.

?The Government of Canada is pleased to be a part of the state-of-the-art Vale Health and Wellness Centre, which will allow this community to enjoy a modern and accessible multi-use recreation facility for generations to come,? said St. Catharines MP Rick Dykstra.

The governments of Canada and Ontario each invested up to $6,866,667 through the Building Canada Fund ? Communities Component. The City of Port Colborne and its partners invested the balance of the total eligible project cost of $20,600,000.

?Ontario is investing in strategic infrastructure projects, such as the new Vale Health and Wellness Centre, to build stronger communities, create jobs and stimulate the economy,? said Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor. ?This facility will provide new and exciting opportunities for the community to gather to play and stay active for many years to come.?

Port Colborne Mayor Vance Badawey thanked all those who contributed.

?We are extremely thankful to all the partners who have worked with us to bring this project to reality. A project built by the community, for the community, the Vale Health and Wellness Centre will be home to the next generation of inspiration.

?With over 240 programs, the centre will encourage PORTicipation, promoting a lifestyle of health and wellness for all ages within the City of Port Colborne and the Niagara Region. This is truly a destination for everyone.?

An integral partner of the City?s in this endeavour is Vale.

The City of Port Colborne has also partnered with the YMCA of Niagara and looks forward to the many benefits the partnership will bring to residents through various programs and activities.

?The Vale Health and Wellness Centre project reflects the YMCA of Niagara?s vision to build a stronger, healthier Niagara,? said YMCA Chairman Patrick Robson. ?This new centre fills an important gap in the City of Port Colborne and surrounding area, bringing health and wellness programs directly into the heart of our community, ensuring access for all.?
